Formula 1 has made perhaps the biggest visual change in its history in the pursuit of safety; the introduction of the Halo head protection system. Integrating the design into the chassis was not the work of a moment, with a weight penalty not fully compensated in the rules, and weight distribution calculation that has caused teams a headache, coupled with an argument over whether it is, indeed, the best solution for driver safety. We look at that, as well as the trends on the grid for this year.
Power unit regulations have changed for 2018, and already teams are now working on strategies where it will be least expensive to take penalties, while in this supplement, the FIA’s technical director Gilles Simon gives his view on the future direction of the PU regulations. With teams protecting their investment, and new manufacturers on the outside looking in with interest, this is key to the immediate future of Formula 1. We also look at how to build a Formula 1 engine block, and we talk to Sentronics about how their fuel flow meter can improve racing.
